I'm buying a Pentax *ist DS digital camera, and I want to have
a decent lens telephoto zoom lens to go with it.
What's the best lens I can get at the 28-200 or 28-300 range?
It appears that not only do Tamron, Tokina, and Sigma, and
Pentax (who doesn't appear to make a 28-200/300 lens) have
varying lens, they also have different versions of the same lens.
I've read over a number of reviews, and I'm not sure which lens
is coming out on top.
I thought I would be paying around 400.00 for the lens, but I can
probably pay a little more than that.
Also, I wonder if I can use this lens with my Pentax PZ 1P, which
already has a Tamron 28-200, AF Aspherical XR (1f)

You seem to have answered your own question, considering that you
stated that you already own a 28-200 zoom for your Pentax film SLR
camera.
Why not use the same lens on your (soon to be bought) *ist Ds?
Both cameras have the same lensmount.
Or, do you mean the same in 35mm equivalent as 28-200mm?
That would be about a 17-140 zoom, considering the 1.5x crop factor on
the DSLR.
I found a 18 to 200mm Sigma zoom lens on eBay:

Maybe that would be the sort of lens you're after?

Thanks, well, I do have a zoom lens for my SLR film camera, but I
hoped to get a better lens, maybe, for my soon to be bought *ist DS.
You are right, though, it seems a little redundant to buy a similar lens if
I can switch them out.
I'm going to get some kind of zoom for my *ist DS. Maybe I should
re-think what I really need.

I own and have used a Pentax *ist-DS for about two months.
Previously I've used a Minolta XG-2 film SLR with a Tamron Adaptall-2
28-200mm zoom.
All I did was get an Adaptall K-mount adapter and use the that lens on
my *ist-DS.
More recently, I purchased a Pentax K 50mm f 1:1.4 and I'm quite
satisfied with it.
I've also got a Peleng 8mm fisheye lens which is M42, which I use with
a M24-MD and 1.4x adapter on my XG-2 and with just a M42-K adapter on
my Pentax ist-DS to get an almost full-frame fisheye lens.
I'm not realy sure what use the fisheye lens have be normally.
To take a portrait, and for the subject to take up a decent amount of
the image, they have to be so close that I get _their_ "nose grease" on
the front element!

I'm thinking I need a 28-300 for more versatility and more fun
with the camera.
What's the best 28-300 I can buy for a Pentax *ist DS?

Apparently the Tamron 28-300mm Xr IF is quite good, not outstanding but
quite good, especially for the price. I intend to get one after I get a
Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro.

Thanks, Pete. The reviews are good for this lens, but it's a compromise
when using a 28-300, it seems, between picture quality and convenience.
