It used to be a gaming rig probably. I would keep it. It's very good for office use or internet browsing and all that stuff. Maybe even play some games. And water cooling? That's awesome.
I would definitely keep it.
On the other hand, you could sell it as long as it's working fine Amd the parts are still relatively new , the CPU is still good, mobo is also good and HDD are always wanted in the market.

It's worth keeping depending on the condition it is in.
A perfectly fine rig and will give you good service for the next year or two.
Though you have very limited options when it comes to upgrading the RAM, since DDR2 is going to be pretty expensive.
You could upgrade the processor to a Quad core later on if you feel like you are short on threads.....
But that's about it.

Yes, it's a quad core.

:(  yup..... my mistake for having just gone through too fast....Extreme....
So that does limit the options even further.....

Yup keep it.... you don't need anymore power under the hood than you already have.

Run CPUID to check, don't be surprised if it's a dual core.

Forgot to mention the PSU is knackered it was a 1100W tagan, could i get away with getting a new 750W??

You could get away with a 550W
February 1, 2013 10:40:53 AM

The guy mentioned dont be suprised if its a dual... Intel says 4 cores... If someone could claify for me.. Its a Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme would be appiricated

Do it when you get the machine running.
February 1, 2013 12:19:38 PM

So do you think a 550W will manage?

They made extreme dual cores so I'm not sure why people are thinking quad.

What PSU you need depends on what the GPU is. You didn't list any video card so its hard to say. A good 500-600W PSU is more then enough to power any single GPU. (might need a 650W if you have a high OC on the GPU and you have a 300W dual GPU "on a stick".) I guess the question to you is do you want to play modern video games on medium/high settings at the cost of the PSU and possibly GPU? Or is selling it for a couple hundred a better idea. Don't forget the feelings of the person who gave it to you if they found out you sold it.

I checked on intel, its this:

Says 4 cores??

If that is the case then its a Core 2 Quad not a Core 2 Duo, either way it's a great freebie.

I gave wrong details on the chip it says:

intel core 2 extreme qx9650
February 1, 2013 1:56:05 PM

I'm using a P4 on a hand-me-down Asus P5GDC-V as an office PC. It does what I need it to do, but not much else. Yours is far better because the CPU is powerful enough for HD video and reasonable gaming. Heck, it's in the 3rd tier on the gaming CPU performance table.

If you look at it from the perspective of platform replacement cost, getting a CPU and MB to replace what you have would require something like a low- to mid-range Core i5 or high-end Core i3, plus a Z77 motherboard and DDR3 RAM. So you could spend more $ to save on your e-bill and reduce noise, but you wouldn't get payback any time soon. As long as you can handle the noise and heat, keep what you've got and enjoy it.

So should I keep the water cooling or sell it?
February 1, 2013 2:28:58 PM

Last but not least anyone reccommend;

550W PSU £15 - £30
DDR2 ram 8GB
Gfx card £15 - £30

thanks

8GB of DDR2 RAM is going to be expensive probably around £80 - £100 and a decent PSU is going to be about £50 although you could get a Corsair 450w for about £35 - £40 and cheap graphic cards are pointless if you have any gaming ambitions at all.

**So should I keep the water cooling or sell it?**
Depends what watercooling it is, if its some allinone or a proper loop

No idea what water cooling it is, never dealt with it
February 1, 2013 10:03:41 PM

I'll sort the name out tomorrow so is it worth keeping for low gaming? :)

Most of the time anything is better than stock fan and Hs, I just want to identify it because if its a tatty allinone unit, you will be well advised to seek a replacement, some allinones aren't as good as they'd have you believe quality-wise
if its proper W/c parts then an assessment is in order as to wear and tear

That looks to be a Laing DDC pump (Decent), whats the info on the sticker say?
I can't id the block but it looks pretty groovy, there looks to be a name marked/stamped on it but I can't make it out
Compression fittings, another mark of quality usually
240 radiator and the thing at the top is some sort of reservoir I'd assume but it almost looks built into the case?
no writing on the front of that or is it just a waterlevel view from the front?
Overall I'd say if you are keeping the comp, keep that cooling,
its old water but even old water is still better than stock,
That was topline gaming kit at one time, R.o.g. badge on the chipset hehe so it would have been decent cooling,
hell even if you ditch the mobo and chip, keep that loop as a startpoint into W/c because if you ebay that W/c gear you won't get much,
it will serve you better being used to cool that rig
