Motherboard graphics vs discrete graphics cards

Hi - my question is simple (I think). I have an Intel I5-3570k (en route) and a Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H motherboard. I'm not a gamer, which is why I didn't purch a discrete graphics cards up front.
Question is; How much of an improvement would a discrete card offer? Would a GT 440(or similar) be a significant upgrade to the onboard graphics?
