Hi folks, bit of a newbie here so please bare with me.
Have just inherited an Acer M1640, with a Celeron E1200 and 1GB of ddr2 ram and a 320GB hdd running on Vista, from a friend of the family, that would not boot nor post.
Having done a fair amount of research it came down to the motherboard being the most likely culprit and not the processor or ram. System powered up lights and fan but nothing else.
The cost of replacing the M1640 board was far to high and only available from the USA. So I looked around for a similar used board using the Nvidia 7050 610i chip set and ddr2 ram that would take the Duo Core Celeron. Found a reasonably priced P5N-MX on fleabay here in the UK.
Well it arrived a couple of days ago and as I hoped once it was all swapped over and powered up it came back to life. Lots trial and error with the bios settings to get it to load Vista, SATA2 HDD and DVDrom which is something new for me being an old git!
Anyway after lots of work sorting things out and getting it running nice and quick now, Acer's own software don't half slow things down! Only thing I had to do driver wise was to connect to the internet and let Vista find and install ACPI ATK0110 driver as this came up as an unknown device. Sound, video etc all picked up fine once Vista finally loaded.
Still left with a few niggley things I'd like to get sorted.
Most important is that the bios and Speedfan both report the CPU running at 70/71C, I know this is in theory close to being on fire but there is a huge fan on these things which is running at over 3000rpm, yes fast and quite noisey (the other thing I'd like to resolve). Now when I touch the base of the cpu running or not it is very cool, can just get my little pinky under the edge of the heatsink. Have also got the other side of the case off to expose the back of the motherboard and the motherboard is again not even what I would call warm to the touch. Just remembered to that Spedfan and the bios both say the system is 69C, the case is totally open and the room it's sat in is under that temp.
Anybody know anything about these particular boards?
I understand that the fanspeed should be controlled automatically by the bios but it never varies at all regardless off what I'm doing. Currently sat here typing this on it, have been on the net, downloaded software, listened to music and watched some streamed video also, all running fine!
I don't think I put much thermal compound on, Artic Silver, besides which before I tried it in ernest I mounted the fan and heatsink without compound to see if would boot and checked the temps then in Hardware monitor and temps were indentical to now....they never alter more than 1C.
Any idea's thoughts or advise I would be grateful of.
