Up date win xp

I'm building a new rig with my old hard drive. My old rig has a hard drive that has win xp(hp pavilian 7000) on it but want to update to win 8. Right now the new rig (2600k, 16g ram, 550ti, z68 MB) is ready for operating system. if I update xp in my old rig to win 8, then install it on my new rig, will widows support the new rig?

It depends really. Usually changing motherboards requires a OS re-install (for me anyway).
