  1. There could be a number of things to check. Start with opening a command prompt screen. Press Start/Windows + R -> type in "cmd" -> press Enter. From command prompt, type in "ipconfig /all". You should see something like this:

Check to see that you have an IP address. If you don't, do you see a message that reads "media disconnected"? If you see "media disconnected" this means that your network adapter isn't detecting a data signal from the router or modem. If you need helps translating the info, paste it in your reply.

To copy the info in the command prompt screen, right click and click on "Select all". Once the text is highlighted, press Ctrl+C. This will copy all of the text in the command prompt. Paste the info in your reply.
  2. This is exactly my problem. How do I fix it? I know that I have internet service - modem and wireless router are working fine... laptop connects. I do have the media disconnected message. PLEASE tell me how to fix it.
    Thanks
  3. Welcome, newcomer! The first thing to check is the obvious, but often missed, step: cables... Ensure the cat5 cable is connected properly. Also try using a different cat5 cable. If this doesn't help, try this:

    1. Open command prompt (explained above)
    2. Type: ping -a 127.0.0.1
    3. Press Enter

If you don't get a reply, your network adapter is deffective.
