Ihave a dell studio XPS 435t, intel core i7 CPU, 920 @ 2.67 GHz, 12.0 GB(ram) 64 bit, running vista ultimate, have a radeon 4600 graphics card 2.0 x 16 pci express want to upgrade to 5000-6000 series card? (5770 or better) can I go to card that is 3.0 x 16 pci express? (not a geek please help)

assuming that you DO have sufficient psu, you can use a HD 7k series card(with pci-e 3.0) but it will change itself to 2.1 due to your cpu. only ivy bridge processors can utilize pci-3* 3.0

i have the same system chopper (only 6GB of ram though, with Win 7). 2 days ago I swapped out the stock PS with a Corsair 650HX 650W power supply. I also replaced my 5450 Radeon (or whatever the stock one was) with a Radeon 7870 2GB card. This card supports pcie 3.0 however like dudewitbow said, our motherboards only support 2.1 (or whatever) so you don't get the full speed there. It does work amazingly however, and it's good to know you can drop in a really nice video card and it works. I would highly recommend that card.
