Ide rom not reading

Hello,
i hav a problem with my ide dvd rom which was reading and writing when itwas new. But lately it has refused to read or write to cd or dvd disc. The unit has power but only cannot read or write. Is there anyway I can try to fix this component?

Any suggestions would be welcomed

did you try to dust off hte lens with a can of compressed air

Can you see it in device manager? You might try removing it completely from device manager, and then reboot and let it re-install it and see if this helps.

I would avoid the can of compressed air where possible due to the chemical residue when shaken. I would actually go out and purchase a CD/DVD disk cleaner from Wallymart.

But then again, it may be cheaper to go out and get yourself a replacement if your system can support it. You mention IDE so this to me indicates your system is in indeed outdated - but I could be wrong.
