I5-3570k vs E3-1220???

I don't play any games.. Not considering the gpu or anything... which CPU will be better for raw horsepower?? Say for video encoding, web browsing with a-lot of tabs open, opening a lot of windows/programs/videos at one time, etc??

I would go for the e3 1220, but if you are gunna overclock, the i5 would be better.

I choose the xeon due to its near infinite lifespan and better architecture for number crunching which is video encodeing

The Xeon will be a bit faster at stock clocks but it's multiplier is locked which means it is a very poor overclocker.
If you're going to overclock, get the 3570K, otherwise go for the Xeon.

Get the E3-1230v2 and call it a day
Comes with 4 cores + 4 HT and is only $10 more than the 3570k
It will chew through encoding faster than the i5
If you get a z77 board with the xeon, you can raise its multiplier to 4 above its normal turbo (in the 1230v2, up to 4.1ghz and the 1220v2 up to 3.9) at 4.1 the 1230v2 should still beat the i5 since ivy hits a wall arround 4.5/4.6

The AMD FX3850 is also a very good choice if not gaming since the 8 threads it has will also do very well in encoding and stuffs and is quite a bit cheaper

I run a phenom iix4 2.0ghz laptop and until i run out of ram, ipeing a lot of tabs(50+) in chrome is no issue

Most cpus can hbalde basic browsing and opening a lot of stuff st once without much issue

Between the i5 and the 1220, the 3570 has more clcok speed and turbo so it will be faster

The E3-1220 has a worse architecture (Sandy vs Ivy Bridge), a lower clock rate, less memory bandwidth, and no iGPU. It's only advantage is ECC memory support, which is unlikely to be useful to you.

On the other hand the 1230v2 is about the same price according to Intel, and does have HT.

All xeons are locked due to server oreintated. Only thing comparable to a unlocked xeon is the 3770k

There are versions of the IVY xeons. The cost the same abd have v2 after the model number e.g 1230 = sandy 1230v2 = ivy

it has the same architecture, they are just better binned
