I have just been nominated as the photo advisor for the school
yearbook. I have 12 kids with digital cameras running around taking
pix. I'm drowning in pixels.
I'm looking for photo library software that has the following
collection of features.
1. Like Armadillo, I need good annotation capabilities, with field
definitions, copy from previous record, hierarchical keywords, and
thesaurus.
2. Like Pink Mouse Image organizer, I need pick baskets.
3. Like Nikon View, I need the ability to browse the file system and
bulk rename photos, rotate the sideways ones, and delete the originals.
4. Like no program I've found, I would like it to be resistant against
an image being moved to a new location, or renamed in its present
location.
5. Like no program I've found, I would like a copy of a cataloged
image made outside of the program to have intact meta data.
6. Like no program I've found, the database should be chunked so that
changing one attribute of one photo doesn't change the modify time of a
huge file.
7. I need a program that understands that seeing a file, and editing a
file are not the same thing. The ultimate program would allow separate
permissions for editing the meta data, appending to the metadata, and
modifying the original image.

Items 4 and 5 are easiest done if the meta data can be encapsulated
into the photo itself, the database merely has to extract them for for
faster use.
Item 6 is, I think most easily done at the folder level

Have a look at iView MediaPro - it creates catalogues and thumbnail
databases that are separate to the actual images. You can distribute
catalogues with screen size views of the images even without the original
images present. Its annotation and search facilities are very comprehensive
and it's fast. Mac and Windows versions are available too and you can
download a trial version.
