I recently went on a cruise to Alaska and thought I had taken some
pretty nice pics with my digital camera. When I got back from the
cruise I loaded the card into my card reader and most of the pictures
were not even readable. A few had some weird psychedelic colors and a
few other were discolored with heads being chopped off and put on the
bottom. If anyone can help me I would really like to be able to
recover as many of these pics as possible.
Are there any free or low cost ways to get the photos back? If not
what steps should I take to try and get the photos recovered?

Try another way to read it. For example, if your camera has a way
to view pictures, put the card back into the camera and see if they
are viewable in the camera. If they are, find a different computer,
or at minimum a different CF reader.
If they are bad in the camera, there may not be much hope...

I suspect the problem is with the reader.
I almost chucked a perfectly good 256MB card becaue my reader went goofy
Try another reader.
You can probably go into Office Depot or Staples and ask the Manager to
try the card on one of his newer computers that have bult-in multi-card
readers. Keep the faith.... All is not lost.

Hi,
I had the the problem a few months ago and tried a demo of "Photorescue"
You can try the demo first and it will show you which photos are recoverable
then you must purchase the program to do the recovering.
It is not very expensive.
http://www.datarescue.com/photorescue/ It worked so I purched the program and managed to rescue most of the corrupt
photos on the card

Greetings,
Just shared on a similar situation with someone else.
I have used Image Recall and found it to work pretty well. Not a
recommendation from Kodak, just my own experience. There is a test
version online that you can download.
There is a chance that your camera is faulty, so check it out as well.
