Start repair cannot repair this computer automatically

Hello,
start repair cannot repair computer automaticaly. Usually it won't let safe mode run. Once it let me check user (and I noticed an unexpected user listed - virus?), and I got to cmd prompt by the chk... didn't work. any suggestions?

Run a hard drive test in DOS... HIRENS BOOT CD etc, it sounds like a failing hard drive...

Thanks Brett but how do I do that test. I don't think this is the hard drive, I had to remove a virus first.
