Too much thermal paste - proceed or start over?

Hey, so I put on some thermal paste, and I saw it only covered a small section of the CPU, so then I added more, and then it gooped out the sides. So should I start over... go find some rubbing alcohol, etc and clean it off, or should I proceed and see how it fares before assuming the worst?

are you applying it properly? generally a rice a grain or a pea is enough you should refer to the manual you received with your thermal paste and watch some guides too much thermal paste can do more harm than good
