Will I be able to use this video card? I realize I will also need to upgrade my measly 500 watt power supply. I just picked up this Gateway FX 6800-01e from a coworker and I'm trying to upgrade it to run Skyrim and D3. So far I've ordered 8 additional gigs of Corsair Vengeance RAM (bringing total up to 11GB once installed), am planning on getting my hands on that 6850, and getting an 800 watt power supply. Between these three upgrades, am I looking at great success or expensive failure?
ALSO: The stock video card is a 4850, though my coworker installed a 45-something (4550 i believe, ATI Catalyst Control Center simply lists it as a 4300-4500 series). It seems that the computer is running on the 4300-4500 instead of the 4850 and I'm seeing no clear way to toggle between the two since I can't run two unlike cards in Crossfire. I'm probably missing something basic here but is there any way for me to get this thing running Skyrim on low settings until I get that new video card by tweaking some settings?
you'd have no problem using the 6850. It also doesn't use more power than the 4850. If you can run the 4850, you can run the 6850.
Even better, I'm now running the 7770! I can now play BF3 and Skyrim on High~Ultra graphics very smoothly. My system actually runs about 15 degrees Celsius cooler.
One curiosity though, I have the card hooked up to the power supply but the Catalyst Control center says there's 0% power. The card is obviously running, and quite smoothly, so I'm not positive if this is a topic of concern at all.
