Is this just a dead hard drive

Hello, my computer was running fine when I turned it off. the next morning it wouldn't boot up.
it got as far as the starting windows writing then nothing.
so I did it again. then I got the motherboard start page you know press delete for setup . tab for Bios but that's as far as I could go. it wouldn't let me go any further.
the mobo is OK as everything I plug in works fine.
I have no way of checking the hard drive as its the only sata connection I have.
I have an Asus p5p800 mobo.
and Pentium 4 CPU

if this is my h/d is there a way to get all the data off it or am I dreaming.

  1. It can be the board as well, start by checking if the drive is recognized in BIOS.

I cant get into the Bios I just get the screen up.
  3. Most likely board failure then since BIOS should come up with out a drive!
  4. Oh that's not what I wanted to hear. :??:
ok thank you for that anyway, I will check that out with another h/drive.

I tried it with another h/drive that I know works and the same thing happened.
    could it be the battery?
I am going to get a new one as mine must be old now.
so will let you know how I go.
    thanks for your help.
  6. Unlikely it is the battery since if that is gone it will only reset BIOS to defaults.
