Computer starts and shuts down repeatedly

Hello,

I have a problem starting my 3 years old computer.

It starts, the fan turns for a few seconds and then it shuts down. It does that repeatedly.

I cleared the CMOS values, took the battery out and put it back in. Nothing changes.

I haven't done anything to the computer lately at all.

Help please!

  1. These are the symptoms of a system with heat and/or power issues. Could be a defective power supply or an overheating CPU or GPU.

Check for the cleanliness of the inside of your system. Also, you could pull the CPU fan and then clean the fan and CPU surfaces and apply new thermal compound. Verify that all fans are indeed working, as well.

Last, you may want to swap your PSU (power supply) to make sure it isn't kaput. PSUs can and do wear out.

    Good luck!
  2. Test you power supply as shown here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5FWXgQSokF4

If your power supply is good, then your motherboard might have gone.
