GTA IV Horrible FPS On Gaming PC

I am suffering from severe lag when I try to play GTA IV. I tried to play the game without any sort of mods and the lag was just unbearable. I had all background programs closed and tried the basics of lowering all the graphics settings. The only time I saw an improvement was when I played at 800 x 600. It is virtually unplayable at 8 fps with icenhancer on medium settings. Before you say I have a crappy computer, here are my specs (all around two months old):

i5 2500k
GIGABYTE GA-Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 Motherboard
8gb 1866 ram
8600GTS sli (512mb each)

READ: for some odd reason, taking one of the graphics cards out oddly improved the gameplay by a couple fps. In the graphics settings it only says that there is 487mb available from the cards. I have no clue how it registers 487mb when it is 1024mb combined together. My mouse is extremely Laggy even though it's plugged into a USB 3.0 port.

I really do not want to buy a new graphics card but I have found a 2gb ddr5 from tigerdirect but it is listed as an "enthusiast" card EVGA 02G-P3-1559-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti Video Card - 2GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), Dual DVI, Mini-HDMI, DirectX 11, Dual-Slot, SLI Ready. I found an overcloked 1gb EVGA 01G-P3-1557-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti SuperClocked Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), Mini-HDMI, Dual DVI, DirectX 11 SLI Ready, and was wondering which would be my best bet. Or if you have some other card to suggest just put it below. (around $150)

If you can solve my problem I would be very greatful. Thank you for reading.

SORRY IF THIS IS THE WRONG SECTION FOR THIS

Found your problem.

btw vram doesnt add up like that. what is in one cards vram is also in the others so when both have 512mb of vram individually they have 512mb in sli as well.

If I remember right GTA IV doesn't work with SLI/Xfire so you will have even lower performance. Also the 512mb will be holding you back a little. It might be worth waiting for Nvidia to release there new mid level cards and grab one of those, the 550 Ti is OK but not great. A GPU upgrade would go nicely with that 2500k..

its a console port with bad optimizations, and your video cards are old.

Yeh I know my cards are super old. Didn't have the money for them at the time I did the almost full revamp. Any tips on current cards 1gb+ got around $150?

For around 150 I would have to recommend in order of performance 7770/6850/6870 (if you can find a 6870 on sale or can maybe spring the extra money, go for that)

GTA 4 is a pig. My 6870 barely barely hits 30-40FPS on "High", shadows turned down to 5. Its a rubbish port. The 550 is rubbish though. I'd get a 7850.

Uninstall icehancer. It's too much for your gpus, especially if SLI isn't working.

I actually ordered a 560 ti overclocked edition. It hits 41 or so fps on bf3 1920x1200 so I think it should run GTA IV a lot better. Anyway if anyone wants a 560 ti there is a $30 rebate currently on them. My EVGA version overclocked edition with free performance boost (whatever the hell that is, maybe their version of windows turbo boost on the i5 2500k?) is $205 after rebate. Good deal IMO. Thanks guys/girls
