That is WAY overkill for WoW.

For gaming though, it's decent, but far from ideal.

An i7 is completely unnecessary/useless for gaming. A nice i5 will give you just as good performance for $100 cheaper. The reason being, games don't use more than 2-4 cores. The $100 you pay for the i7's 8 cores is a waste.

Save the $100 with an i5 and buy a better graphics card (unless all you play is WoW, in which case that card is fine). Better yet, get an SSD. They are SO nice. Especially if you play WoW.

An SSD is almost critical in MMO's like WoW (and this is coming from a long-time MMOer). The massive amounts of data that will be going in and out of your hard drive will benefit from an SSD. MMO's have huge worlds that you need to load, and an SSD will give you much faster load times.

Also, consider a 3rd gen (Ivy Bridge) Intel processor instead of a 2nd gen (Sandy Bridge). Ivy Bridge is just a bit faster and newer, so there's really no good reason to get a Sandy unless you can find a sweet deal on one.

Thanks for the quick response. I might just bring it down to the i5!
I know its overkill but i also have a whole library of games from steam summer sale just waiting to be played. this outdated laptop can't run anything (not intended even for gaming it has a amd 4500 lol)

Someone had recommended an i7 for me because i was interested in some editing, but i doubt it will make too much of a difference and the 100 dollars is too much to pay for a small difference.

And if i was to buy an ssd or higher end gpu, any suggestions for the money?
Do you have a part picker or ncix link for the specified parts you gave? Thanks alot for the help again

Unless you need to do some really serious editing, like for a high level class or job or something, I really don't see a reason to get an i7. An i5 would be a good call. Again, I would definitely get an Ivy Bridge instead of a Sandy Bridge (I mean why not?).

If you are going to save the $100 and put it somewhere else in your rig, I would upgrade the PSU first. Getting a nice modular 750W PSU will save you money in the long run, because it is one of the few parts that can be carried over to a future rig. It will also allow you to SLI/Crossfire later on if you ever want/need to.

Aside from that, a bump up from your current graphics card would be a Radeon 7950. For the $100 price difference (and it's actually a little less than that I think) this is a VERY nice upgrade, the 7950 is pretty fast already, and can overclock like a beast.

A third option would be a $100 SSD to load your OS (fast boot times, incredibly nice) and MMO's on. For $100, I would recommend the Vertex 4 128GB. I have it and I can tell you right now, it's sweet.

Sorry I don't have a part picker link or anything, I'm in between classes right now so don't have much time. If you still need help later though (and I will check back on this forum) I can get into more specifics.

Good luck!

Don't worry about the Part picker, i figured it out and made myself a cart on ncix.
I decided to drop the cpu to the i5 like suggested.
i went with the:
Intel Core i5 3570K Unlocked Quad Core Processor LGA1155 3.4GHZ Ivy Bridge 6MB Retail ($219.99)
Which is pretty nicely priced compared to the i7.
I think for now, im going to just stick with the basics as is, and upgrade to an ssd in the near future when i got some extra money lying around.
I guess now the only question is... Is all the parts compatible. and won't bottleneck etc.
I've still got to buy an OS. never really brought that into account while pricing my build so with the lower price drop i could pick up a copy of windows7. I don't trust the "Illegal version" with my machine just because i want it to be like new and not be worried if i will brick my machine.

thanks for any further input.

It's all compatible, although you might want a Z77 mobo instead of an H77, just so you can overclock later if you want and because the Z77's tend to be a bit nicer. If it strains your budget to much (which I don't believe it will) then an H77 will be fine however.

Overall it's a solid build, enjoy!
