Upgrading My GPU (need help for around $150)

I am going to be upgrading my graphics card to be matching my system. I am looking to play BF3 on ultra or just high. Also I want to play GTA IV with iCEnhancer and many car mods. I was wanting some input on what would be a good card for around $150 (highest I would like to go us $175-$180). I just want to see what will match my system.

i5 2500k
GIGABYTE Z68AP-D3
8gb (1866) RAM
Current GPU: EVGA 8600GTS 512mb sli

My current GPU can't even handle GTA IV on medium settings. It runs about 10 fps with only one card in.

Thank you for reading.

More about upgrading need
  1. I would recommend, at that price range, looking at:

    AMD: 6850-6870

    NVIDIA: GTX 560 (Fermi)

Those will run Battefield 3 High-to-Ultra and should fall in your price range.
  2. I was looking at a 550 ti. Any clue on that? Thanks for the suggestions.
  3. What is your Power supply first please tell us the name and model?
  4. 550 Ti is not a good card. If you tolerate rebates, some 6870 models post-rebate squeak in under $150: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150561

Or if you want to go nvidia, get a 560. Compare benchmarks of 560 and 6870 to 550 Ti here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/540?vs=541 and http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/543?vs=541 Not even close.

If you stretch your budget just a little, you may be able to get a 6950 or 560 Ti on sale.

    +1
  6. Currently I am running a 600w that I'm borrowing while mine comes back from warranty. Idk the model. Otherwise I run a 750w thermal take idk the model cause I'm not at home. Give me a couple hours.
  7. also what games and resolution you play @.?
the GTX 560 and HD 6870 are competitors with each one winning in certain games.

  8. P.S.
your welcome for the chart... ;)
  9. Thank you sir.
  10. I was just kidding... :)
  11. Anyone know about the 550 ti 2gb edition? 6870 is looking tempting. Probably going with the 6870 dirt edition by sapphire. Anything to say about the sapphire just say so.
  12. no to any GTX 550 Ti for gaming when the HD 6870 is only a few dollars more.
    Sapphire is OK to me.
  13. Ok thank you. Probably getting the 6870 1gb dirt edition. I don't have much money so it seems like the best bet. Thank you verbalizer.
  14. enjoy it bro.....
  15. The extra GB of VRAM is a joke on that 550 Ti. Its GPU is not strong enough to handle high-resolution gaming, which is the only time you'd need more than 1GB. I don't understand what the actual market is for a 2GB 550 Ti, other than people who are confused. Fortunately, you're here on the forums. :)

The 6870 is a good choice.
  16. take one last look at the GTX 560 if you have the money for it, if not then HD 6870 is the way...

    as I stated earlier, enjoy.
  17. Is the 7 fps better really worth an extra $50? $200 is a bit much but if you guys think it's a better idea I might as well do it. The 6870 comes with dirt 3 which I want. Also one of the links said bf3 was around 43 fps on ultra. While the chart above says 34. Thank you all anyway for the input.

well I had mentioned the GTX 560 and not the GTX 560 Ti...

    that's different..!!!!!
that destroys the GTX 560 and the HD 6870...
    that's why it's $200.

but if yo can get it and not be strapped financially then do so..
  20. So I am coming to the conclusion to spend the extra $40 and get the 560 ti over clocked edition by Evga. Spend that money and not have to upgrade soon.
  21. I agree to that..
  22. Well, lot more options to spend more money on an hold off an upgrade a lot longer, lol.

So, if it's not the original $150($175-180), what is your real top dollar?(even though that is a good card)
  23. I'm only stretching to that because it will be $210 with the rebate. I was hoping for my suggested dollar amount but that didn't happen. If there is a better card or something for that $210 please tell me.
  24. GTX 560 Ti - $210
equals a win in my book..
  25. Thank you for all the help/advice verbalizer. I really mean it.
  26. no problem, it's still fun even for this 'old jedi'.... :p
I have SLi N560GTX-Ti Hawks and before I got two for SLi I had just the one 560 Ti..
    I am also on a 1080p monitor.
it can play all the games really really well with some on max settings.
  27. I basically wanna play GTA IV with lots of mods(pretty intensive on the system) an bf3 maxed out for now. That's about as far as I have planned.
  28. http://m.tigerdirect.com/aHR0cDovL3d3dy50aWdlcmRpcmVjdC5jb20vYXBwbGljYXRpb25zL1NlYXJjaFRvb2xzL2l0ZW0tZGV0YWlscy5hc3A/RWRwTm89NzE5MTQ1MA%3D%3D that's the mobile link. Or here's the part name: EVGA 01G-P3-1561-AR GeForce GTX 560 Ti Free Performance Boost Video Card - 1GB, GDDR5, PCI-Express 2.0 (x16), Dual DVI, HDMI, DirectX 11, SLI Ready

Or the one I posted earlier? Is overclocked or is the "free performance boost" better?
  29. get the cheaper one...
  30. Ok I'll go with the overclocked edition.
  31. works for me....
  32. Ordered my 560 ti FPB overclocked edition today. Thank you for all the help and dealing with my indecision verbalizer.
