OCing Q8200

Here is my pc

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200
Foxconn G31ax-k motherboard
Hyper 212 fan/heatsink
2x 2gb OCZ Gold DDR2 800 mhz
EVGA Geforce GT 240 Graphics Card
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS sound card
NZXT M59 case

I have no option to overclock in bios.

The only option i have to overclock it is using Fox One software that came with my motherboard.

Even using that i can only go from 333mhz x 6 to 343mhz x 6. If i try to take it over 343 it immediately locks up.

It's not a temp prob because temps range from 23C - 30C. It never gets above 30C.

I've seen others oc q8200 to 2.8 and 3.0 ghz. Is my problem my motherboard?

My last setup was an MSI G31m3-f v2 with an E5300 dual core and it overclocked from 2.6ghz to 3.2ghz with no problems.

  1. I don't think the G31 chipset was ever designed as an overclocker. The (as I recall) P35 and X37 were.
  2. I have an Asus P5WD2-E Premium motherboard as well as the msi G31m3-f v2 that i used to use. I wish i knew for sure if the asus would work. The Intel Q8200 isn't in the supported processor list but it is a socket 775 motherboard like my foxconn and msi. I've never ran anything other than a 3.4 Ghz P4 in the asus. I also have to make sure that this foxconn board will run my old e5300 processor as my wife still needs a working desktop lol
