New built desktop power problem

Hello,
My son has just built his first desktop, however it will not turn on fully. He had connected the 24 pin but as he didn't have a 8 pin with power supply left it blank. The computer would not turn on so there was one 4 pin connector which he then connected to the 8 pin slot, now the comp turns on and fans start for a few seconds, but no more. Anybody suggest what to do next.

  1. can you test the PSU on another PC?
  2. No don't have one only a laptop
  3. here is a link to the paper clip PSU test but basically you want to try to test each part to make sure it works properly, much easier with another PC.

sounds like a PSU or mobo issue (assuming all the connections are made 24 pin, 4 pin or 8 pin to the CPU)

  4. maybe you need to have the 8 pin connector not 4 pin

    there is an adaptor

  5. it should still start and post even with a 4-pin power connector.

    possibly so

but i couldnt say 100% sure that it would

i know some motherboards would but have no way of knowing if every single 8 pin board will
  7. thanks will try the adapter and see how it goes from there

    no problem

    dirtyferret may be right

but trying a £3 adaptor first just to see could save a load of mucking about
  9. Right I got the adapter today and still the same thing is happening.
