New built desktop power problem

Hello,
My son has just built his first desktop, however it will not turn on fully. He had connected the 24 pin but as he didn't have a 8 pin with power supply left it blank. The computer would not turn on so there was one 4 pin connector which he then connected to the 8 pin slot, now the comp turns on and fans start for a few seconds, but no more. Anybody suggest what to do next.

No don't have one only a laptop

maybe you need to have the 8 pin connector not 4 pin

it should still start and post even with a 4-pin power connector.

possibly so

but i couldnt say 100% sure that it would

i know some motherboards would but have no way of knowing if every single 8 pin board will

dirtyferret may be right

but trying a £3 adaptor first just to see could save a load of mucking about

Right I got the adapter today and still the same thing is happening.
