Cant get windows xp to get the windows update

I start windows update it doesn't do anything, it begins to sort of download all the updates but then it stops and states unable to load update and gives me a series of problem and what to do next to correct them but nothing ele.

I selected one of the recommendd things to do but it doesn't help. It stated that one of the problems could be my IE not having all the SP's loaded. It recommended for me to download SP2 but to uninstall IE and I can't uninstall IE with WIN XP. Is there soething wrong with my computer? I have formated my hard drives twice and have started from scratch but no results, any idea anyone?
