I am using an hdmi splitter to connect my cable box and pc to a projector that only has one hdmi input. i run xbmc as a second monitor on my pc which is what i want to run to the projector. however, when i use the hdmi switch and switch to the tv, the pc disconnects the projector and xbmc will start to run on my primary display. when i switch back to the pc from the hdmi switch, the second monitor is opened, but xbmc remains on the primary monitor.

is there some way for the pc to believe the second monitor is still connected, so xbmc can run in the background, waiting for me to switch back to pc?

i know this is a bit confusing, i'm sorry. any help is greatly appreciated.

I have to say that your description is very confusing. Where does the TV come in if you have a projector connected to the HDMI switch? A block diagram of how you have things wired would be helpful.

No, you cannot trick your PC into thinking there is an active HDMI connection when there isn't one. You might try a program called UltraMon and see if you can make a couple profiles to do what you are asking. Generally, though, a Windows 7 PC is going to try to find an active monitor connection.

my pc only has the one primary monitory and the projector that is used as the secondary display.

thanks iknowhowtofixit, that is kind of what i figured. i'll try out ultramon and see what it can do. i'll also see if i can make some kind of keymap that will change xbmc's display settings without having to go through the menus.

Besides the fact that HDMI works on a "handshake" token - where both devices need to communicate in order to get the signal

I believe the MIRRORING feature in UltraMon is what you're looking for...?

i haven't checked out ultramon yet, but i'm not interested in standard mirroring. i want to be able to use the primary display as my pc (web browsing, etc.) while having the second display (projector) only displaying xbmc. i don't want xbmc ever to be displayed on the primary display.
