How do i configure Switch

I am doing Internship specialising in Technical Problems. but I'm interested on how to Configure a switch and how to server to a network and also where the network comes from: I'm within a large building My department consist of many servers, Network Printers we have more than 500 computer on the network. this is a hell of alot to explain... if you are talking of configuring a switch then it must be a managed switch. a non managed switch has no configuration. a managed switch can be a layer 2 or layer 3 device, by way of definition a swich is a layer 2 device but some allow for dhcp and dns servers and thus they are layer 3 switches. to explain a network of this size would require many hours ....
