I just finished my first build, and I was able to get everything to POST, install Windows 7, install drivers, get online, and everything ran OK. I then tried to get into my secondary drive with all of my media on it through my networked TV, and the computer shut down, and has been turning itself off and on at random intervals ever since. Sometimes I am able to load into Windows, sometimes it won’t even make it to POST. When it does POST, I am getting the normal single short beep.
I read the MB manuals troubleshooting section and it mentioned setting the jumpers for master and slave. I had not done that (neither HDD has them), so I removed the secondary drive and tried to restart the computer. It booted into Windows and stayed there for several minutes, so I figured problem solved, and I turned everything off, moved the computer back over to its home on my desk, and started it back up. It went back to turning itself back off and on, single beep when posting, temp on MB staying in the 30-40 range (MB has a thermometer/Bios post code LCD indicator).
The secondary drive was originally Seagate external drive that had the SATA/USB adapter fail, so I removed it from the case and used an aftermarket SATA/USB adapter. I figured it would run better attached to my SATA connectors inside my PC, which is why I hooked it up. It is a Seagate 500 GB Barracuda, and has no Jumpers. The rest of my components are as follows:
MB – Biostar TZ77B http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138352
PSU – Rosewill Hive 650 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132
CPU – Intel i5 3570 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115233
RAM – Gskill Ripjaw 1600 8Gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428
GPU – Gigabyte GV-N650OC-2GI http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125444
Case – Rosewill Blackhawk http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147107
HDD – WD Caviar Blue 1TB w/ 64MB Cache http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822236339
Does this have something to do with the drive, or is it a coincidence that everything went haywire when I tried to access it the first time and it is the PSU and/or MB?
