Msi R6870 help

So I got a computer from a friends friend (I know not a great idea) anyway I went to play Fallout New Vegas and it would only run it on low settings. Any higher it would get kind of jerky, not smooth gameplay. I tried playing Skyrim and it auto set the game to High and everything runs smooth. Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

Amd 1055t stock cooling no Oc.

8gb Ripjaws X DDR3 ram

Msi R6870 Hawk 1gb DDR5

I know it's not a super card but I thought I would be able to play on high. Any help would be great.

Have you tried updating the drivers?

The 6870 is a solid mid range card.I have 2 of them in crossfire.I would suggest getting a aftermarket cooler and O.C. the CPU.

Yeah, the drivers are up to date. Even with my cpu running stock shouldn't I be able to play New Vegas on high? I just don't know what the problem could be.

Yeah it's strange because Skyrim is a lot more demanding than New Vegas.The only thing I can think of is a driver related problem.
