i am trying to replace time warner wireless router with a belkin that I purchased. my problem is that the TW router has a cable connection (round cable connection - the same cable as for cable tv), but the new router does not have a connection for this cable. I'm sure I have to connect this cable to something in order for it to operate???
What model of time warner router? Sound like it might be the kind that combines the modem and router into a single device. If so, then it will not have a WAN port, only one or more LAN ports and a COAX port for the cable. And if that's the case, you can't get rid of it because the new router you bought is only a router, not a modem+router!
None of this prevents using the new router, it just means you need to keep the old modem+router in the configuration by chaining the new router to the existing modem+router, WAN to LAN, respectively:
Just make sure each router uses a DIFFERENT subnet. For example, if the old modem+router is using 192.168.1.x, then perhaps make the new router 192.168.2.x.
One downside is that now your double NAT’d, and that may complicate firewall management (since you now pass through multiple firewalls), and may see a slight increase in ping times (probably only matters to gamers). Sometimes these modem+routers can be configured for what’s called “bridge mode”, which demotes it to a simple modem, eliminating the double NAT. If that’s an available option, I would enable it.
