I am severely limited in money. I want a super cheap card for light gaming. The two cards in consideration are the GT 430 and the HD 3870. The 430 is two years old and the HD 3870 is four.

THE SPECS:

GT 430-
#96 CUDA Cores
#1GB 128-bit DDR3
#PCI Express 2.0 x16
#Direct X 11

HD 3870-
#320 Stream Processors
#512MB 256-bit GDDR4
#PCI Express 2.0 x16
#Direct X 10

They both are the same price. Which is best for gaming? Does Direct X 11 make a difference? THANKS!!!!

The Radeon HD 3870 is much better, but if you have $50-70 you can look for a used Radeon HD 4890 which is still pretty decent.

Here's a comparison between the GT440 (Couldn't find GT430, which would be less powerful) and HD 3870. The 3870 is the slight winner over the GT440 and would really show a difference against a GT430. Also, the GT430 doesn't have enough power to actually play DX11 games well, so support is irrelevant.

That would be a tougher call. I believe the 4890 is faster than the 5770, but not a lot and lacks DX11.

4890 > 5770

Same number of steam processors, but higher clocks and double the memory bandwidth. Besides the tessellation engine on the HD 5000 series isn't very good, so DX11 isn't as big a deal as the 4890 will outperform the 5770 by a decent margin, more so at increased resolutions or higher AA.
