Keep current GPU or change?

Last response: in Graphics & Displays

I’m looking to get a GPU that is future proof. My current GPU of choice is the GTX 670, with the possibility of adding a 2nd one in the future.

The rig is first and foremost a gaming rig, BF3 is my game of choice but will buy new games as they come out. I want a GPU that can run BF3 with 60+ fps (32vs32 matches) as constant as possible without turning off AA/MSAA. In a nut shell, I want to run BF3 on High/Ultra with no hick ups or very few of them.

Also if I upgrade my GPU/or SLI the current one I have will I need a bigger PSU?

Budget: $500
Purchase date: Late Sept.Early Oct.
Resolution: 1920×1080

Everything seems nice except for two things.

1. Since your budget is $500 for the graphics card, you may as well pick 4 GB GTX 670 in case you upgrade your monitor in the future.
2. Do yourself a favor and get i5-3570k instead of i5-3570. It costs almost the same but has the potential to be 25% faster.

I will instead get the i5-3570K, only thing that bugs me with the 4GB GTX 670 is that it's another $150 for 2GB more.

When I compare them on newegg the GTX 670 2GB has a faster core clock.

No need for the 4gb. Just get the 2gb gtx 670. That card is stupid fast. Also, as mentioned above, grab the 3570k and overclock that baby to around 4.0-4.4GHz. Make sure you get an aftermarket CPU cooler such as this to keep it from frying.

4gb of VRAM would only be necessary if you plan on running a triple monitor setup. In your case, that wouldn't be a good idea. BF3 is best ran on a single monitor...especially for competitive purposes.

The 2gb gtx 670 would be perfect for running a game on one monitor and doing research and other menial tasks on the other monitor.

Your links are not working for me.

With a $500 graphics card budget, get a GTX680. 2gb is fine.
Is it worth the extra $100 more than a GTX670? Probably not, an overclocked GTX670 will approach a GTX680.

I would plan my graphics upgrade by selling your initial card and replacing it with something stronger in the future. Today, that would be a GTX690, but, more likely, you will see a faster kepler card at a better price instead.
One argument for a gtx680 is that the top end single gpu cards will usually command a better price on resale.

If you stick with a single card upgrade approach, there are other benefits:

Your psu wattage requirements will be 150-200w less. A 650w unit will handle a GTX690, and likely any other single card in the future.

You can buy a cheaper non sli capable motherboard.

There will be less heat generated in your case so you will need only a less expensive case.

A single gpu will insulate you from games that do not work well with sli.

On the rest of your build:
A Z77 motherboard will let you oc a 3570K.
If you live near a microcenter, they will sell you a 3570K for $190.

For gamers, 8gb will be plenty. But ram is cheap, so I see no real negative to 16gb.

I would suggest a simple aftermarket cooler like the $30 cm hyper212.
Compared to the stock intel cooler, it will cool better, be quieter, and is easier to install.

Today, I would look at the Intel 330 ssd instead, mainly for reliability.

I would dump the front panel monitor.
I see it as mostly "bling".
Spend the budget elsewhere where it counts.
