I think I need a video or graphics Card for an old Compaq Presario E85-00970, S6010V.

The monitor keeps saying its going to sleep. I have tried several different monitors and cords. I have reset all the sleep/hibernation settings. It has to be the computer. Immediantly after booting up we get the message that its going to sleep.

I stole the power supply out of an old HP and eplaced it. Still get the sames results. If I new what the graphics card or video card looked like I would steal it from the old HP too.

How do I find out for sure if a Video or Graphics Card will work?

Where can I buy a replacement Video or Graphics Card?

Any and all help appreciated.

It dosn't sound like a graphics card problem. More like a corruption on the hard drive which a full reinstall would fix or it could be corrupted memory then the pc will shut down to protect any curruption being saved or faulty power switch on the base unit or stuck power button on a multimedia keyboard.

I hope it doesnt mean wiping and reinstalling because that means I will loose the mapping to the sever (which is not that big a deal) but our mfg software is networked and that is difficult to redo.

She turns it on, logons on the network, she gets to the desktop and then KABOOM ... you either saee a message saying the monitor is going to sleep or the monitor just goes blank.

Is this a clue.... most times the monitor goes blank a minute or two after rebooting, but every so often the machine will run an hour or two before we loose the monitor

Also I was told that even if the graphics card is integrated...as long as the motherboard has [available] expansion slots you should be able to add an OEM graphics card. ...and if it's not too old, your local Best Buy may have one on the shelf ???

And I was also told that it is a bios issue....

PCI vs On board
I did F1 and went into BIOS and changed the video card from PCI to onboard. (I have no idea what this means) I reset the computer a couple of time and it appears to reboot just fine,

So far I have not lost the monitor (but I only made the change 3 minutes)

I will keep you updated.

Thanks,
Laura
