If you do mean thumbnails type in Start Run
Regsvr32 shmedia
and also try
Regsvr32 /i shell32
Regsvr32 /i shdocvw
The first repairs registry entries for thumbnails, and the other two repair the file type more generally.

What preview are you talking about.
Previews were removed from the XP's equiv of folder templates for music and video (but not graphic). Instead MS supplied a Media Preview bar (it replaced the folder templates/Common Tasks bar). However this was removed in a service pack.
You aren't refering to thumbnails are you.
