I currenty have an older gifted Dell XPS 700 with the 720 motherboard swap. It currently has an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz, I was looking to see what I could upgrade it to, and if it had to be a special PLGA 775 type.
Specs:

Socket 775

Mainboard:
Model:0ck520 A01
Chipset: NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI SPP Rev. A2
Southbridge: NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI MCP Rev. A2
LPCIO: SMSC

BIOS:
Brand: Dell Inc.
Version: A06
Date: 04/01/2008

750W Power Supply
4GB DDr2 800MHz 2x2 memory
Stock XPS fan and heatstink

I will NOT be able to upgrade my Mainboard as it is BTX and a dead end. I will NOT be getting a new computer or new anything else besides a CPU upgrade to the one I already have, I am aware this is an old system but I will not be buying a new one anytime soon.

So basically you are asking about upgrading XPS 720 right?

This is from the manual http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/xps720/en...

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo (dual-core processor)

Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme (dual-core processor)

Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme (quad-core processor)

I see that QX6850 is routinely installed into XPS 720, I also seen confirmation of QX9650 installed in XPS 720, but this requires more investigation. If you are interested in QX9650 then read this http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3...

For now it is official chart below

Here is another looking similar Dell's validated CPUs

PW016 Kentsfield Quad QX6850 3.00GHz
RX656 Kentsfield Quad QX6800 2.93GHz
CX696 Kentsfield Quad QX6800 2.93GHz
UP673 Kentsfield Quad QX6700 2.66GHz
C864D Yorkfield Quad Q9450 2.66GHz
HU585 Kentsfield Quad Q6600 2.40GHz
MP626 Kentsfield Quad Q6600 2.40GHz

Numbers to the left are Dell part numbers.

I hope it is enough information for you.
