If a laptop had a VGA port, would I be able to put a VGA to DVI adapter, then plug that into a graphics card? This would look ridiculous but all my friends don't have very good laptops and even worse computers and only one of them can even play Team Fortress 2 with me at a decent frame rate.

Yea, you can't really upgrade the components of the laptop unless you use something like a ViDock, which are pretty expensive and I'm not sure that they are worth it.
