I just bought a HP HPE h8-1234 with a AMD Six-Core FX Processor and am wondering if the Radeon 7970 is compatible with my new computer. It looks like the length of the card won't be an issue. Specifically, the card mentions it uses the new PCI Express 3. I did a search and have found that the motherboard model number is M3970AM-HP (Angelica2) made by Gigabyte.

This link,, products info on my board. It mentions its has a PCI Express Gen2 slot.

I assume that one can not put a Gen3 PCI Express card into a Gen2 slot?

Any ideas?

Perhaps I can upgrade the motherboard with a newer HP model to get a Gen3 PCI Express slot. Besides not realizing that PCI Express x16 had different versions, I am loving my new machine.

Gen 3 is backwards compatible with Gen 2 and the other way around as well. You should be perfect.

And with a good new power supply that card should work great. You could also get a new case if you like and mount the HP in there. I did that for my cousin actually.
