so, looking at the specs of the HD 7870 and 7770, the 7870 looks exactly like a fusion of 2 hd 7770s. why is it that the benchies show hd7770cf crushing hd 7870 when 2 hd 7770 is basically the same thing as an hd 7870? am i missing out on something here?

Which reviews are you looking at? They should be somewhat close but the 7870 should win as crossfire scaling is rarely perfect.

Some quick searching found the results from tech power up putting 2 7770s in CF between a 6950 and a 6970
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/HD_7750_7770_CrossFire/22.html

While their review of the 7850 and 7870 placed the 7850 between the 6950 and 6970 with the 7870 significantly higher.

With 7770s costing 125 each and a 7850 costing about 250 that is about right, the 7870 should always be slightly better since it costs significantly more.

wow really? silly me. i was just looking at the crysis review, where the cf7770 crushed the hd 7970. the results are so inconsistant. obviously, at higher resolutions the one gb limit provides a bottleneck, but sometimes i'm seeing the cf7770 loosing to the hd7770. this is really wierd. best idea is to stay away from cf i guess.
