I need to set up my Father in Law with his Linksys wireless router and his ATT/SBC speedstream DSL Modem.

When I connect it logically, we lose the internet through the dsl modem. I have the dsl to the modem, Ethernet to the router but when I plug the desktop into the router, the modem no longer gets internet.

Why does this happen, of course Tech support was very little help.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

disconnect the modem from the router, log into the router, and change the LAN IP to 192.168.5.1

reconnect modem to router

the modem might also be using 192.168.1.1 and create a conflict

Thanks for the reply, that is what we did do, but had to call linksys and pay 30.00 for that advice. You have figured out the problem. the i.p. addresses were different but not different enough ( 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1)
