External IDE RAID solution?

I have to back up about 1000 GB of data. I am considering using IDE hard drives with mirroring (I need safety).
Is this the best way to go?
Is there an external unit I can buy that will allow me to swap the HD's easily?

I would look at Promise's RAID solutions. They have external cases that attach to SCSI controllers. The external cases utilize IDE hard drives.
