WONT SEE ANY CDS!!

My dad has a yamaha 8x4x24x cdrw drive in his emachines computer. it has been working for about 6 months untill one day it just wont dectect any cd with data on it or any blank cd, windows dectects the drive and says it is install properly, i have reinstalled windows, reconnected the drive and it still refuses to work! Does anyone have any suggestions??? I dont remember him doing anything to it, i burnt a cd like a week ago and it was working fine, but last night it wont do anything... he has:
a celery 500
96megs of ram
a yamaha 8x4x24x cdrw
millenium edition windows

It may have broken- sounds liek teh symptoms. make sure it isn't disabled in Bios.

The bois sees it, i installed it on my computer and it does the same thing, sees no disc... the drive doesnt make any funny noises or sounds at all...
