Lower FPS due to prior overheating?

Just recently I've been noticing significant loss of frames per second in multiple games and I'm worried that I may have damaged either my GPU, a GeForce GTX 470, or my CPU. The overheating in question happened during a session of Civilization V, a notoriously resource-heavy piece of software, where the computer would shut down without warning after an indeterminate amount of time. At first I dismissed it, deciding to stay away from Civ for a while, but then I noticed that games like Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim were experiencing a noticeable FPS hit, especially when rendering multiple character models. Could anyone help me figure figure out if damage form overheating is indeed the case, and if so, which hardware needs to be repaired/replaced? Thanks a bunch!

Not in all circumstances. I will update the first post with the temps when running each game.
