Dvd/cdrom problems

Hello, hp dv6809wm notebook entertainment pc with vista sp1. DVD/CDROM works but isnt communicating with the rest of the system. Not recognized in computer,or device mgr. Done all the troubleshooters to no avail. Whats a guy to do to get back the drive?

the data cable could have come loose...might want to take it apart if you know what you are doing.

I thought of that. Looked under the inspection plate for the ram and could see that the drive plugs into a fitting that appeared to be directly soldered on the circuit bourd. Do you know anything about filters? SD\MMC took its place and drive letter in device mgr. and my computer. I uninstall it but didnt do anything to bring the drive back. Do you think im on the right track?
