Hello,
I recently posted on a pc build help forum my parts for my first gaming computer and they recommended me to change my AMD 8150 to an i5 3550. After some research i found that the 8150 is better for gaming and cheaper. What do you reccomend?

This is Tom's ranking for gaming CPUs. CPUs that perform similiarly are grouped together in each tier.
Notice the i5 3550 is 3 tiers above the FX 8150 in the list.
Notice the FX 4170 and the previous generation of AMD Phenoms are 1 tier above the FX 8150.

The 8150 is not a gaming processor. Notice even the lowly i3 2100 is a full two tiers above the FX 8150 in gaming.

ok, just giving you a poke. generally speaking either cpu will be fine since most games rely on the gpu than cpu. though for games that do give more of a load on the cpu, like skyrim or BF3 MP then it will usually swing towards an intel cpu even with the FX overclocked.

and generally the the i5 will perform better in most applications. if you are on a tight budget; well they are close to the same price with getting a cpu cooler for the FX to overclock it . . go with the i5.

If you already have an 8150 don't bother with an I5. Even though the 8150 is lower performance than the I5, its not earth shattering.

If you really want to change - wait for haswell next year, or wait to see how the next iteration of the 8150 comes out-codenamed steamroller.

Woops just noticed it's for a new build. Anyways the i5 is better. Not sure where you got your information from about the 8150 but it is weaker than the i5, actually all i5s.

True, although there are certain situations where a dual core won't cut it, no matter how good it is. Although those situations are quite rare.

I can bog down my I5 with certain combinations of programs running.
