what is the differnce between the Different USB 2.0 or 1.1 what ever the #'s are... would there be any Compatability problems or conflicts with anything
USB 2.0 is about the same speed as Firewire, these standards are cross compatable, but run at the speed of the slowest interface (a 2.0 device on a 1.0 controller runs at 1.0 speed, a 1.0 device on a 2.0 controller runs at 1.0 speed).
SCSI is lightning fast even compared to Firewire. Firewire is 400Mbits/sec, or 50MB/s. Old UW SCSI was already 40MB/s, U2W is 80MB/s, and Ultra 3 is 160MB/s. Ultra 320 is not really in use yet. Firewire also requires no hardware configuration as SCSI does.
SCSI is a lot more common, but becomming less so. SCSI started getting pushed out of peripherals by the inadequate USB interface because people were to stupid or lazy to set it up. That's when scanners really took a dive in speed as well.
Utra 160 is over three times as fast as firewire, Ultra 80 is almost twice as fast, Ultra is a little slower, fast wide is about half the speed, and Fast is half of that. Fast SCSI is the protocal that most SCSI peripherals use, it's 10x as fast as USB and 1.5 the speed of Firewire. It's also equal to 67x CD speed, so Fast SCSI is fast enough for everything except hard drives.
Also consider the money, SCSI scanners are about 1/5th the price of similar Firewire scanners.
Hmm okay then. THanks for the reply. Well I might get a couple Ultra 160 drives later on when prices come down. But with such a fast transfer rate what advantage do you get? Like the Ultra 320 which will come out probably later this year that's twice the transfer rate of the Ultra160.
