GTX 580 ti vs 670

So I was looking for a card to replace my 560 ti, and I'm most likely getting the 670, but I couldn't help but notice that on Newegg almost all models of the 580 ti are more expensive. It also seems that there are more 580's being sold used for less than the 670's. I'm pretty new to custom PC building, but I was fairly certain that as a general rule the 600 series was superior to the 500 series (I understand that there are superclocked/special edition variants that surpass their newer counterparts). If anyone could help explain the reason for the price difference in these two cards, and if I should look into a used 580 over the 670, that'd be great. Thanks:

The GTX580 used to be a top of the line! The GTX670 outperforms it and is the next generation so the GTX680 is the top of the line and higher priced.

For that price difference I think I would go for the 680.
