Upgrading from Intel Core i3 370M to Intel Core i7 840 QM on an Acer TravelMate

Hello,

I own an Acer TravelMate 5740G and I intend to upgrade the Intel Core i3 370M CPU in it to a new Intel Core i7 840 QM processor. The machine has an Intel Ibex Peak-M HM55 chipset and a discrete AMD Radeon HD 5650 GPU. The laptop has no support for switchable graphics, just discrete Graphics.

Is this upgrade possible?

According to the specs for this chipset http://ark.intel.com/products/43183/Intel-BD82HM55-PCH the CPU is compatible. http://ark.intel.com/products/codename/29960
You may need to update the BIOS before installing the CPU - http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers
  2. Hey Kenrivers,

Thanks a lot! I'll definitely upgrade!
  3. I would be VERY concerned about CPU cooling. Laptops are infamously undercooled and this will be much worse when substituting an i7 for an undercooled i3.

On specs: states support for i3 and i5 doesn't include i7

About that, its' catered for. The laptop comes with a powerful, dual-vent fan and a large H/S/F assembly, that should cater for it.
