2 power connects on my 7970 (1x8pin 1x6pin)

Hi guys. I have a Sapphire 7970 OC edition GPU and was wondering something. It has 2 power connections, 1 X 6 and 1 X 8 pin. I have connected them both, is this right? It seems to be working ok but not sure it its getting the right power for its maximum potential.
