Laptop works but screen is black

I can hear it go through all the humming and normal sounds (windows start up etc...) but nevertheless the screen is black. If there is no repair costing a fortune (I am disabled (bedridden) single mother @32) ...is there a way to retrieve the much needed contents/data from the hp compaq nc6400.

ANY and ALL help is so genuinely appreciated.

Can you hook up an external monitor to it?
