Tom's Hardware,

I would like to setup a personal proxy server. The reasoning behind this is basically to ensure a secure proxy rather than relying on free (and most likely foreign) servers.

I'm not sure what the difference between SOCKS 4 and 5 are, nor do I know if there are other proxy types that may be better for certain applications.

Basically, I am looking for a process to follow with which I can set up a personal computer as a proxy with little to no 3rd party software (preferably none).

I apologize for my lack of knowledge regarding proxies. If you need any additional information, I will be more than willing to provide it.

Simply speaking, Socks 5 supports authentication while Socks 4 does not. So Socks5 is better for you.
There are many proxy server softwares, you can try CCProxy and Wingate. Here's a quick start for CCProxy: http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/quick_start.htm. Not found similar instructions in Wingate's website: http://www.wingate.com/
