New computer moniter problems?

Just got my new computer and i'm having some problems with the display, I use to run my old computer through my 42" TV through VGA, so I plug my new computer in the same way and get no display... I see that where the graphics card is that there is a HDMI so I put that in and the display comes up. Does this mean I have to run it through HDMI?
