Pci-e x16 va pci-e x8

I'm about to order an asus xonar essence stx, but I just checked my case before placing the order and notice the the pci-e slot is behind my gtx 460, so it seems like I would have to move it to a pci-e x8 slot to fit the new sound card. Would there be a noticeable drop in performance in the x8 slot? Or did I overlook something, and I would be ok placing a pci-e x1 card into a larger slot?
