I'm moving! I currently have DSL, and I'm moving to an area that only has @home cable service.
I need to buy a cable modem. I think I should be able to buy a modem cheaper than what they offer it for($204). Any suggestions? What features does @home require to be compatible? I need an external modem with an ethernet port, because I would like to use my Netgear RT314 Router to share internet access.
Update: Which Modem?
Toshiba PCX1100U USB/Ethernet $142
Motorola SB4100(Surfboard) USB/Ethernet $143
BestData CMX110 Ethernet only $128
Anyone have any experience with the BestData Modem? I don't really need the USB port. It is only a $14 difference anyway.
Does anyone have experience using the RT314 with @home? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.
Thanks.

I tested several, (don't ask how)andI have the Toshiba pcx 1100. It has done a very good job for me. Easy to setup this weekend I hope to hook it to a d-link router and share access with the other computers in the house
If you see a turtle on top of a fence post,
It's a good bet somebody, put him up there.
Thanks. I checked out pricewatch, and went with the toshiba. newegg.com had it and I had heard good things about them. I hope to have it in a couple of days.
I like most of this posting have the Toshiba (ethernet only version). Best warranty of all that is offered 5 years. Most others are maybe 2 years and less. The local service in Omaha, NE said the toshiba was one they liked with docis (cable modem standard, check to make sure your service is docis supported) I see others out there even RCA has one for $199 at Radio shack. If you plan on networking two computers and share files I would stick with a PCI ethernet 10/100 card instead of USB. This is very fast compared to 10mbps nic cards and USB 1.1 is only 12 mbps. Now the new USB 2.0 which you should be some products and support later will be 460mbps very similar to firewire speeds (untill their next version appears). Windows XP will have USB 2.0 support but the question is how much??????.
$3 a month???? wow, thats cheap. here in rhode island it cost $15. i bought mine cause after renting it for a year i would have paid for it anyway and wouldnt own it.....
$3 a month would be a steal. I wouldn't buy either.
I paid Cox@Home $15 a month for 6 months before I got wise and bought a Motorola Cybersufr for $60 on Yahoo auction. Right after I bought it they started using DOCSIS modems but still support the Cybersufr's (knock on wood). It's been about 2 years now so I've got more than my money's worth though. DOCSIS is supposed to be the official standard so you can't go wrong buying one now (unless you can rent it for $3 of course).
Everybody what does your service cost? Cox in Omaha is raising their price from $30 to $35 and I swear it is only half as fast as it was when I first got it. DSL is still more money and slower so I guess it doesn't matter anyway
The @home service in Connecticut is $34.95. I haven't been on it much, but I would have to say my DSL service was faster. The DSL line is supplied by SNET(owned by SBC). Their internet service sucked, so I went through a local ISP for internet. It's expensive, $39.95 to SNET, $10 to Netplex for internet. It screams for playing games.
The @home service is, unfortunatly, going downhill. I have friends that have it, and it has gotten much slower. Alot of bottlenecks. I using it because I moved and DSL wasn't an option.
In my area, @home won’t install any cable modem but their own. The cable modems they use have their serial numbers in a database which @home uses for authentication. I found this out the hard way. If they do allow you to use your own I have a brand new Toshiba on e-bay for $100. (I couldn’t use it!)
